A stimulating life

At Edensor Care Centre our award-winning team will ensure your loved one can enjoy a varied and stimulating life with an activity programme that meets their specific interests and needs.

Our vision is to provide activities that are enjoyable and meaningful to your loved one, that maintain and develop their skills and independence and promote their quality of life.

This is particularly important if they have dementia because while a person’s memory for facts becomes impaired, long term memories can remain and so can memories of how to do things.

The Montessori approach

Edensor has adopted the pioneering Montessori Method for Dementia and Ageing - an innovative approach to dementia and aged care.

More usually associated with children, Montessori education methods have also been found to be highly effective for supporting people with dementia.

It is now widely practised across the US, Canada and Australia, achieving very positive outcomes – including improving quality of life and significantly reducing the need for antipsychotic drugs and sedatives.

The goal of Montessori is to support people to be as independent as possible, so they can make choices and are treated with respect and dignity. At Edensor we achieve this through meaningful activities and a supportive environment.

A meaningful life, with activities that include:

Cognitive activities such as reading aloud, discussions about current events and simple puzzles

Skills for daily living - exercises and activities that help your loved one relearn and maintain key skills, such as feeding oneself or dressing

Socialising - for example through dining together and group entertainment

Movement - Activities could be seated or standing up and movement can improve wellbeing. This could be exercises in a chair or even a stroll down the promenade.

Sensory - stimulating the senses using touch, colour, taste and smells

Music and art - Activities can be tailored to your loved one's individual likes and capabilities.

Reminiscence - using memory books or designing activities that link to your loved one's earlier life

Community participation - helping your loved one play a meaningful role in the Edensor community, for example, helping to pour drinks for others, fold serviettes, gardening.

An enjoyable life

Your loved one can also enjoy entertainment including bingo, quizzes, cooking, crafts, theatre, singalongs, reminiscence sessions, painting, drawing, gardening etc as well as celebrating Christmas and other festivals for you all to get involved in.

Outings are organised seasonally with picnics, barbecues, pub lunches, garden centre visits and beach hut days. Winter outings include shopping trips, carol singing and viewing Clacton’s festive lights.

A life that is your own

If your loved one has a particular interest or hobby we will do our very best to cater for this and encourage you to bring anything from their home that will support them with this.

Birthdays and anniversaries are always celebrated and private functions can also be arranged for family and friends to enjoy.

Our residents are also free to organise their own social events as they wish throughout the year.
